These magazines are open to submissions from new or experienced short story writers, and offer payment for publication.
It is difficult for a writer in any area to take the first step and publish a piece. For short story writers, getting paid for a story often seems impossible. However, there are many ezines and websites that specialize in offering short stories in a wide range of genres. Here are the websites of a few magazines that are willing to publish new writers as well as more experienced writers, and pay for what they publish. Publish Short Stories With Glimmer TrainGlimmer Train Press, Inc. prints quarterly magazines with over 250 pages of short stories. Be sure to check the website carefully before submitting; there are a few different topics for each month, with different guidelines on themes and word count. Glimmer Train published short stories up to 20,000 words, including flash fiction. The pay is typically $15-$20. Stories accepted also have the chance to win several cash prizes up to $2,000. Publish Literary Stories With Carve MagazineCarve Magazine is an online publication that publishes literary fiction on a quarterly basis. The response time for submissions, which may be made online or through regular mail, generally takes between four to six months. There is a small fee ($2) for online submissions. Carve pays between $20 and $50 for short stories. One Chance to Publish a Story With One StoryThe concept behind One Story, an online literary magazine, is to constantly change and stay fresh by only publishing a writer once. Every three weeks, a new story in a new voice is emailed to all subscribers. While there is no chance of repeat publication, the pay with One Story is very good: $100 and 15 contributors copies for first North American serial rights for stories between 3,000 and 8,000 words. Publish Exciting Short Stories With Spinetingler MagazineSpinetingler is an online magazine that publishes quarterly issues filled with mysteries, thrillers, science fiction, fantasy, romance, and more. Stories are typically 1,500 to 6,000 words in length. All submissions to Spinetingler are made via email, with the stories attached as a Word document or RTF. Be sure to check their website for specific instructions. Spinetingler pays $25 for a story once it is published. Get Paid to Write Short StoriesBeing a writer requires patience and dedication.
