These markets are open to submissions from new or experienced poets, and offer payment for publication.
Poetry is a difficult craft to master, but beautiful when accomplished. If making money as a short story writer is difficult, then getting paid for poetry can seem nearly impossible. However, there are publications that offer a paycheck for poets whose work is selected. Here are a few magazines and ezines that are open for submission and pay to publish poetry. Get Paid for Poems: Poetry MagazinePoetry Magazine is a print magazine founded in 1912, and published the early works of poets such as T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, and Carl Sandburg. While the magazine receives a high amount of submissions, acceptance is great both for the poet's reputation and bank account. Payment is currently at $10 per line with a minimum payment of $300. Poems can be submitted via the online system on their website as word document or rich text format files. Poetry magazine is open to submissions all year, and aims at a response time between six to eight weeks. They also accept regular mail submissions. Publish Poetry: Artful Dodge MagazineArtful Dodge is an American literary magazine that publishes fiction, poetry, and narrative essays. Their issues are available in both independent and chain bookstores. Artful Dodge is only accepting submissions via regular mail. The editors do accept simultaneous submissions, and can take up to six months to respond to queries. It is recommended that writers read a few issues before submitting to get a feel for what type of poems the editors prefer. Poets should submit no more than six poems, and longer poems are encouraged. Artful Dodge pays in copies, in addition to $5 per page. Publish Dark Poetry: Strange HorizonsStrange Horizons is an ezine released weekly that focuses on speculative fiction, including fantasy, sci-fi, horror, and slipstream. They publish short stories and poetry, as well as essays and reviews. This magazine is focused on modern poems with literary depth. All issues are digital, and a subscription is free. The editors of Strange Horizons prefer poems that are less than 100 lines. Payment for new poetry is $20 per poem. Submissions can be made via email, and poets may submit only one poem per email, six per month. Visit the Strange Horizons website for specific instructions on submitting poetry. Publish Poetry: The Threepenny ReviewThe Threepenny Review is a U.S. based literary magazine that releases quarterly issues. The magazine publishes poems as well as short stories, articles, and reviews. All submissions should be made through regular mail. Poems should be less than 100 lines, though the editors acknowledge that exceptions are possible. The Threepenny Review pays a flat rate of $200 per poem. Get Paid to Write PoetryMaking money as a writer of any sort, from poet to novelist, is difficult in the beginning. New poets should query often, accept rejections and query again, and most importantly, continue writing and improving their craft! Often, fiction magazines accept poetry as well as short stories.
