These magazines are open to submissions from new or experienced horror writers, and offer payment for publication.
Whether it's a chilling supernatural tale or an all-out gore fest, some writers love to scare. For those that possess the talent to terrify, consider making a second income publishing those horror short stories in a magazine or ezine. There are many online and print magazines that pay for stories from both novice and previously published writers. Here are a few that accept submissions of horror stories. Publish Horror Stories With Horror Fiction MagazineA new print quarterly journal, Horror Fiction Magazine publishes between six and twelve short stories per issue. Stories must be under 10,000 in length. Upon acceptance, Horror Fiction Magazine offers $.03 a word for stories. Publish Horror Stories With Apex MagazineApex features stories where "weird science and horror collide." While they enjoy stories with a horror or thriller angle, only submissions with a science fiction angle are accepted. The magazine is available in print, on Kindle, or as a PDF. Stories should be less than 5,000 in length, and payment is $.05 a word. Submissions should be made via email, and the response time is generally twenty to thirty days. Publish Horror Stories With Shroud PublishingFor horror writers that enjoy telling fantasy, mystery, and suspense stories with a dark twist, Shroud is a great print magazine to consider. Stories should be submitted electronically in Doc or RTF format, along with a bio and contact information. Shroud pays a flat rate of $10 for flash fiction and $25 for longer stories. The average response time is two to four months. Publish Horror Stories With Weird Tales MagazineAs the name suggests, this magazine isn't so much looking for horror as they are for "weird." However, stories that can be called fantasy, horror, and supernatural may very well qualify. Also of note is their "One-Minute Weird Tales": mini-stories between 20 and 150 words made into a video with a soundtrack. There is no picture involved – Weird Tales describes it as "a funky hybrid of a movie trailer, a Zen koan, and an Adult Swim between-show bumper." See their website for a great example. Weird Tales Magazine pays writers between $.03 and $.04 a word within eight to twelve weeks upon acceptance of the story. Submissions may be made via email or mail, with a standard six to eight weeks response time.
