Copywriting may be a good place for someone to look into starting out as a freelance writer.

Copywriting is a huge business and growing every day. It is used in magazines, newspapers, and websites, among many other places. The demand for talented copywriters continues to grow and this is good news for those that wish to break into freelance writing.

There are many facets of copywriting, each one with their own skill sets. Writing a radio ad takes a different approach than writing for a website. Here we will take a look at a couple different copywriting markets that are ripe for a good freelance writer.

Direct Marketing

Everyday many of us get tons of junk mail in our mailbox. There are circulars from the local grocery stores, advertisements from all sorts of companies, as well as non-profit organizations asking for donations. Each piece of mail that stuffs our mailbox is an example of direct marketing.

Direct marketing is exactly what it sounds like, marketing for a particular product or service sent directly to the consumer. Each company knows that the competition for the consumer’s attention is brutal. They know that they only have an incredibly short time period to hook the consumer and get them to read more. For those that feel they might be able to write in this style, direct marketing may be something to look into.

Website Copy

The internet is everywhere. It is possible to connect to a website from just about any place on the planet. Everybody and their brother have a website. This saturation in our lives has made it possible to find and buy whatever we want, whenever we want.

There are tons of websites that are clamoring for our hard earned cash. They have to talk the websurfer into cracking their wallet and pulling out the sacred credit card. That’s where a copywriter proves their worth.

For those that have been to a website with a pitch a mile long, that was done for a reason. Websites use the age old techniques pioneered by people like Claude Hopkins. One of the things that they found was that long copy works better than short copy. It is an art that can be mastered.

Learning the Art of Copywriting

Copywriting is just like any other genre of writing. There are different techniques that must be practiced. There are some great books out there by people like Bob Bly and Peter Bowerman. There are also some great websites that are helpful, but we must always be careful. There are a lot of dishonest people out there wanting to make a fast buck from a naïve soul. The Copywriter Mastermind Yahoo Group is one bunch of people that will guide a budding copywriter.

Copywriting is an integral part of every industry. This means that most people should be able to find a niche that they are interested in and know a lot about. In a short time, they could even become thought of as an expert in their field.

There is a lot of earning potential in copywriting. It is definitely worth taking a look at it, for writers that are looking at different ways to broaden their horizons. Pleasant surprises may pop up for those that are willing to stretch themselves.
