Any information that can help sell one's writing is good. The 2007 Christian Writers' Market Guide is great tool.
There are many markets to sell ones writing, but the trick is to find the right one. There are great resources out there like the internet and the Writer’s Market. For those that are looking for a Christian Market, Sally E. Stuart’s 2007 edition of the Christian Writer’s Market Guide is an indispensable tool.
Stuart has been putting out the Christian Writer’s Market Guide for two decades now. It has become the go-to resource for those looking to sell their writing in the Christian market. The 2007 edition is packed with tips, resources, and, most importantly, a vast list of markets for the Christian Writer.
Stuart starts us off with the Introduction. I always love to hear what successful writers have to say. In the Introduction, Stuart tells a little about what to find in the book and gives us some encouragement. She also has an offer that can freeze the prize for those that want to receive the book each year.
The next section of the book, How to Use This Book, is small but important. The 2007 Christian Writer’s Market Guide has a lot offer and this section will help get the most out of it. Stuart explains the possible information that could be included in each listing. There are over 30 potential pieces of information in each book publisher and periodical listing. Stuart also gives us some tips on contacting publishers and she lists some resources.
Stuart gives us some great resources in the next section, appropriately titled Resources for Writers. There are 70 pages of resources that will help writers with just about everything. Some of the categories are Connecting With Other Writers, Elements of Style, and Freelance Jobs. This is a vast collection that will have one looking things up for hours on end.
Now we start to get into that meat of the book. Well almost. It’s topical/subject listing of book publishers. So if someone is writing a devotional and they want to see what kind of publisher would be interested, they can turn to Devotional Books and see the list there. Then they can go to the publisher’s listing and get more information. It’s a very convenient time saver.
The alphabetical listing of book publishers is obviously next. There is enough information for each publisher to help get a good idea if they are right for one’s book. At the very least, each entry has the name of the publisher and their address. Most of them have a website listed and other contact information. Many of them have tips from the publisher on what they are looking to publish. For a complete list of possible entries, take a look at the How To Use This Book section.
After the list of book publishers is a tool that can mean the difference between getting published and getting rejected. Stuart gives us a market analyses that has information that help writers understand what the market looks like in the Christian book publishing world. There is a list of Publishers in Order of Most Books Published Per Year as well as information on Royalties, and Advances. There is so much information here and that should not be overlooked.
The topical listing as well as the alphabetical listing of periodicals is next. It has the same vast amount of information as the book publisher listings. There is also an analysis of the periodicals market that is just as great as the book publisher’s market analysis.
Stuart wraps the guide up with some lists to help the writer fine tune their craft and get support and encouragement. There is a list of greeting card companies. One will find Christian writer’s conferences listed by state. If a writer wishes to join a Christian writer’s group, they are listed by state.
This book has much to offer the Christian writer. To sweeten the deal, the 2007 Christian Writer’s Guide Market Guide comes with a CD that has the book in .doc format and .pdf format. Writers can have this valuable tool a mouse stroke away.
There is a reason that the Christian Writer’s Market Guide is held in such high regard. Sally Stuart has put great effort into making this guide. I think most will agree that Stuart has a God given gift and she has put it to good use here.
